[2015 Retrospect] Fallout Shelter

2015 is winding down everybody, and while Matt and I gather our thoughts on the games we've played for our year-end podcast, I can't help but remember the ones that I took a bunch of screenshots of. And never posted. Like Fallout Shelter!

Because you can name anybody anything you want in Fallout Shelter, so you should probably name them after whoever the other guy on your website is. Even better, it has enough of that classic Vault Boy kitsch to make any non-Matt Amberg characters entertaining too! Especially when they're on fire (smiling), shooting nukes indoors at people-sized roaches (smiling), or dying (smiling)! It's probably why I still steal a glance into ol' Vault 666 from time to time, just to see if Matt continues to enjoy working at the Water Treatment plant with 5 of his 183 children.

He does!

Some might say that Matt's parents were bound to meet while confined to the only living quarters of a small human ant farm, yes, but some might call it destiny.

Regardless, Matt's parents wasted no time getting pregnant or having the baby several minutes later, and so a young Matt Amberg was welcomed into the world.

It has been said that "it takes a village", and Young Matt's life was no different thanks to some ably-named neighbors that were often described as "10% happy" or "in the diner."

But Young Matt was a dreamer, and he would sometimes visit his father's work area to passively wish he had a pet nearby. "Not until version 1.3 son, not until 1.3..." his father would always answer, trailing off into his work again. I…

But Young Matt was a dreamer, and he would sometimes visit his father's work area to passively wish he had a pet nearby. "Not until version 1.3 son, not until 1.3..." his father would always answer, trailing off into his work again. It was a strained relationship.

Undeterred, Young Matt would wander between rooms smiling about his parents' neglect, talking to anyone who would listen, wondering deep down if maybe the 24-hour workday was really worth it in the end. Was it?

"Forget about it, come sad-dance with us!" his neighbors would say, but they were too late: Matt had become a man. A Matt-man.

Yet somehow he felt more alone than he had ever been. "Everybody doing okay?" he would often ask completely empty rooms in a not-so-silent cry for help. He knew the answer.

But then it happened: he met someone. Someone that unhappily loved spending time with him as much as he unhappily loved spending time with her!

Someone who would sad-dance with him and tolerate all the pick up lines his father had taught him!

Of course sad-dancing eventually led to sad bedroom time and Matt soon had a smiling son of his own, never to leave their side. Not even a little bit.

And so they lived 99% happily ever after.
